BENV7813 Assignment 2 - Fabrication

1. Nest We Grow

The most interesting thing in this model is the timber structure with the base part of the concrete wall. There is concrete wall embedded with the ground floor, helping to protect the wood from moisture. This structure divides into two sections: the first part is the base section. At the bottom of the structure, the concrete wall protects the interior space from strong external winds.

Technical: Casting base stair   &  Laser cutting structure and facade

Scale: 1:50

Materials: Plywood, Hydrostone powder, Polycarbonate.

All of the components:

1.columns and beams 2. concrete base 3.timber structure 4. Polycarbonate Facade

Technical describe:

1. Casting concrete base stair of this building which is using laser cutting to make the negative part of the base stair and cast the Hydrostone mixture liquid into the mold to get the positive part I want.

2. Timber structure

Using laser cutting to cut 6mm and 3mm Plywood and get the columns and beams in a scale of 1:50.

Combination model:

This is a very straight look at the different material for two part of the building. I put two 1-50 scale man and it is easy to read the scale of the model.

Additional Polycarbonate Facade:

Use the polypropylene to laser cutting the facade of the building as a transparent material.

2. Nest We Grow/ Detail model

Technical ambitious:
 Wood workshop & Metal fabrication

Scale: 1-5

Materials: pine wood, bolt, steel panel

This model is used to show a 1:5 joint model made by the 1:50 model above, which is used to demonstrate how the column is connected to the beam and can support the structure.

There are two parts to this joint model. The first thing is how to cut the column out of the groove to insert the beam into it. The second thing is to connect 4 pillars with metal sheets on the basis of this column and beam. Reserve the position to connect other components.

cut the timber and sand this column

4 pillars  combine as one column

the steel rod to connect beam and column

middle steel plate the connect the column

planning to drill holes into this joint model

Final work for this project.

3. Church of the Light/Tadao Ando

There are two parts of this Church, the first one-part is the base sinking ground floor, and another one is the church box. Based on very simple elements like rectangular boxes and intersection planes, Ando modeled the church using light to create space.

Technical ambitious:
CNC (Timber) & Laser cutting

Scale: 1-50

Material: pine wood, Plywood

1. CNC base: model the stair going down to the bottom of the church create an interesting space.

2.Adding furniture into the base ( chairs, desk, artificial man)

3. Set the laser cutting box on the top of the base.

The indoor of the space will create interesting light in the interior with different time light comes in.
